Recently I went to Cancun for a friend’s wedding. All-inclusive resorts are convenient and BIG fun, but they can wreak havoc on your body!

In a matter of a few days, I put on EIGHT pounds! YOWZA!

The moment I returned, I knew I needed to lose weight quickly before those babies stuck around!! Here are my top 4 tricks that I do to say adios! to those pounds.

Trick #1 – Love Your Liver

The liver has the role of producing bile that we want to fire up when we get back from vacation. One, it helps filter waste from the body and it helps break down fats during digestion.

To help this process, I drink a warm lemon water concoction first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Mix 1 cup of filtered water, squeeze half a lemon into it, add a splash of apple cider vinegar, and a dash of sea salt in a mug. Put the mug in the microwave for 30 seconds to get it to be room temperature. Your body will absorb the warm water faster.

The lemon and apple cider vinegar will stimulate bile production. Bile will then get busy flushing out all that waste and breaking down fats.

Lemon is also high in vitamin C. Great for boosting your immunity after traveling.

Apple cider vinegar is considered a prebiotic. Think of it as food for probiotics…the good bacteria. When the good bacteria can thrive, your digestive tract will function better. Better digestion = more energy and leaner body!

The sea salt will help to replenish minerals after some serious partying.

When you drink alcohol, it depletes minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron, folic acid and others. You can check out a full list of vitamins and minerals affected by drinking from this article by The Healthy Drinker.

Some people will add in cayenne pepper. It will boost your metabolism briefly because of the capsaicin in it which causes your body to heat up.

If you can’t stand the tartness, you can add in a splash of honey. I prefer not to start my day with the sugar. It’s all a personal preference. I also find that the salt increases saliva production which dulls the tartness.

Finally, drink the lemon water with a straw. This will help save your tooth enamel!

Trick #2 – Flush It!

When you travel and get out of your routine, there’s a very good chance that much of it is dehydration. Your body will start retaining water.

Retaining water = newly added pounds!

This is the easiest step to do and if you only do ONE, this is it!

The general rule of thumb for drinking water is to drink half of your body weight in ounces. After a vacation though, I up that amount a bit until I feel back to normal.

Trick #3 – High Protein

Tuna | Tami McVay - Wellness & Lifestyle CoachA good deal of the damage from vacation probably came from big portions. When you come off of a week of big meals, it can be hard to go back to good ole simple salads!

You’ll feel like you’re starving!!

To get around this, I increase the amount of protein I eat. The protein will satisfy you longer as it takes more work to digest it.

I prefer cans of solid white albacore tuna in water. Each can is 100 calories and 24g of protein.

Tuna can be high in mercury, so you want to mix it up with other fish or proteins after a few days.

Trick #4 – Tried and True

Last, but definitely not least…you need to get exercising again! Time to burn off those extra calories!

For the first week or two after getting back from vacation, I’ll do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Your body is still in a fasting state after sleeping all night, so it will be forced to tap into fat stores for energy.

I also immediately get back to lifting weights. I want to maintain or gain muscle to boost my metabolism. When I feel stronger, I make better decisions. Silly, but true!
