There are so many factors in our day that can make us feel tired. Lack of quality sleep, eating foods that make us sluggish, emotionally drained from our jobs, too many glasses of wine the night before…
The list goes on and on!
When you’re feeling tired and weak for prolonged periods, you have to experiment a little and see what makes you feel better.
Most people think of anemia when they think of iron deficiency; yet, the average person doesn’t get to that extreme level of deficiency.
If you are slightly deficient, you can start feeling tired and weak, get headaches, and brittle nails…to name a few. For a full list of symptoms, check out this article by the Mayo Clinic.
The type of iron that is in beef is the easiest to absorb by the body, but many people have reduced the amount they eat due to cholesterol concerns and the increased fat.
You can also get iron from eating greens. It isn’t as easily absorbed by the body though, so you have to eat a ton to get the same amounts as beef.
It’s hard enough to eat your veggies, let alone by the barrel-full!
This article by Parenting Science gives an excellent breakdown of iron and those things that inhibit absorption.
Try This Trick!
The iron in greens is absorbed better when you combine it with vitamin C. Lemons and limes are an excellent source of vitamin C, so I combine the two.
Make your salads by squirting the juice of lemons or limes on your greens. Then you can top it with fruit, like strawberries or mandarin oranges, to offset the bitter taste. (Tweet that!)
(Bonus tip: Do this in your green smoothies too! Try this Pineapple Mojito Green Smoothie from Simple Green Smoothies.)
The funny thing about health is that the tiniest change can have the biggest impact. Will you feel less tired by doing this? Hopefully. If not, keep experimenting.
The best part is that by eating more salads this way…you’ll feel better in a variety of other great ways!
