Having a “Word of the Year” seems to be the latest trend. People who are driven by goals like to select a ‘theme’ for the year.
It can simply be a single word or a phrase that symbolizes what you want the year to be about.
I’ve done it off and on over the years. One year it was ‘crush my comfort zone‘. I booked a trip to Brazil on a whim and had the best vacation of my life!
In 2014, it was ‘passion’. I wanted to do some soul searching to discover what I was truly passionate about and make some career changes.
(You can see how that turned out…I’m here!! 🙂 )
In 2015, I dug really deep and worked on discovering my core desired feelings with the Desire Map.
My CDFs are ‘soulful‘, ‘expansive‘, ‘audacious‘, ‘affluence‘, and ‘freedom‘. These aren’t just Words of the Year…they are a way of living my life.
Here are 3 reasons why you should pick a “Word of the Year”:
Selecting a “Word of the Year” is a concept that can seem kind of hokey; yet, it can hold a lot of power if you let it.
Reason #1 – Focus
When you have a theme to focus on for the year, you can make decisions along the way to incorporate that word.
Say your word is ‘connection’. You can make it a point to call your parents each week, have lunch with your best friend, network and meet new people.
By the end of the year, you’ll feel much more fulfilled and happier.

Reason #2 – Action
When you have a theme that you’re focused on, it is only natural that you’ll start to act on it. Taking action is the key to motivation!
You’ll start to reap the rewards for your efforts and it will only make you want to do more.
It’s a great reminder of what you’re capable of! We tend to limit ourselves and can really accomplish a lot when we put our hearts and soul into it!
Reason #3 – Memories
How many years blend together for you? A year where nothing really stands out. You were happy. Things were good, but not too exciting.
You were simply doin’ your thang, right?
After a year of dedicated focus and taking action, you’re going to feel pretty amazing! Whether you accomplish tangible things or have a better state of mind, you WILL remember the year!
In case you forget later, you can always reference your “Word of the Year” list and go “A ha! I remember now! That was the year I…”
